How did you meet?
Steve used to work in a restaurant when he first moved to London from Norfolk and worked with my best friend there. We never met then, but they both stayed friends over the years and some time later I saw him pop up on her Facebook having commented on something…. I asked her who her cute friend was and she put us in touch. We had our first date less than a week later….and as they say, the rest is history!
Tell us about the proposal!
I had just left my current job and we had a long holiday booked before I started something new. We had been in Hong Kong for a week and had the most amazing time exploring the city. We flew from there to Bali for last part of the trip, where we had visited previously together and absolutely fallen in love with. We got straight off our flight from Hong Kong, dropped our bags at the hotel and walked straight along the beach headed for our favourite restaurant. As the sun was setting Steve asked if we could stop and sit down a minute and there on a quiet part of the beach he proposed! I had no idea what was going on, it was a complete surprise!
How did you choose where to shop for your wedding dress?
When I was a bridesmaid for my best friend (the one who had known Steve from work and introduced us both!) we came to Isabella grace together and found her dress with the amazing team. She had recently had a baby and it was really important to me she could be there with me to try on dresses so I booked an appointment at Isabella grace knowing how great the experience had been when shopping with my friend and it also meant my friend didn’t need to travel far to come dress shopping with me! I also asked if the baby could come along and staff were so accommodating, one of my fittings was even moved to be at the store instead of a different location to make it easier for my friend to travel with her newborn.
Tell us about your wedding dress experience, and why did you choose your wedding dress.
I had never really been one to dream of my wedding day and what it would all be like… but when it came to my dress I had a set idea of what I wanted based on my usual style and how I dress. Being quite petite I wanted something fitted and simple to not overwhelm my frame. I knew I wanted something classic and elegant too.
Only having 3 months until my wedding day a lot of stores I rang panicked me with the idea of not having long enough to order in dresses, or needing to pay higher charges for a “last minute” dress. When I rang Isabella Grace they were amazing, they reassured me I had plenty of time and gave me a list of brands that would work to that time frame in terms of ordering in and also sent me pictures of samples they had available which I could buy without ordering in. My appointment at Isabella Grace was my first one, and I had 2 more lined up in the afternoon back in London. I tried on only a handful of dresses before the amazing Helen helped me whittle down what was working and wasn’t working for me. I think my dress was the 4th or 5th I tried on, my face lit up, my mum cried and it was all very special… I did try on a few more to be sure, but it’s true what they say, when you know, you know! I promptly cancelled my later appointments in London and said yes to the dress!
I was lucky enough that the dress was a sample so I didn’t have to worry about ordering it in, so as soon as I said yes, the dress was mine! The fantastic Ami was able to get it fitted to me perfectly over the course of 2 fittings.
Each time I visited the team they were so lovely and accommodating, they were even happy for us to bring along my friends very tiny baby to be part of the fun!
Describe your wedding day. Where, when, how…
We got married at the stunning Gosfield hall in Essex on 23rd January 2020. It was exactly 6 years to the day we first met and also exactly half way between my family home in East London and Steve’s in South Norfolk. We had our Niece’s as flower girls and my friend Jeannie that introduced us , gave the most beautiful reading in the ceremony.
We had our ceremony, drinks reception, dinner and evening party all in the same venue and most of our guest were able to stay in the venue the night of the wedding too.
We wanted our wedding to be small, direct family and very close friends only and we ended up with around 60 guests for most of the day. The day felt so relaxed and everything flowed so well being in the one location. It really was everything we could have wished for.
Favourite part of your wedding day?
The ceremony. It was so intimate and such a little lovely bubble with all our closest friends and family. It was perfect, the atmosphere in the room was something I will never experience again.
For dinner we also hoped for a ‘sweetheart’ top table meaning we sat just the two of us. It was so lovely to sit and enjoy our first meal as husband and wife together and have some time to catch up on the day as it goes so fast!
Anything you would change if you could do it all again?
No…. apart from something very trivial, I had the most amazing vintage jacket from Miu Miu which I wore as we came into dinner and read my speech. I really wish I had worn it for all of dinner, but I was too warm… silly I know but everything else was just perfect!
Your top tip for future brides?
We didn’t have long to plan so we set some time aside just the two of us early on to go through key things each of us did and didn’t want for the day. This helped us very quickly align on what we both wanted without any expectations from others. We did a lot of things that I guess you would say weren’t traditional, but it meant the day was unique to us and we didn’t do anything we felt we had to do.
